"On Revelations of Abuse committed by Cesar Chavez"
The Department of Ethnic Studies and Languages at Sonoma State University condemns and denounces the sexual abuse and violence committed by Cesar Chavez, co-founder of the UFW. We share the profound pain this moment brings to many in our communities, particularly to those who have long looked to the farmworker movement as a source of dignity, courage, and collective struggle. To the survivors, we see you, and we stand by you.
We stand with Dolores Huerta, Debra Rojas, Ana Murguia, and with all survivors who have come forward and with those who are not ready or are unable to do so. Their courage in speaking out, often at great personal cost, must be heard, believed, and respected. We stand with you, and with all survivors of sexual abuse and violence, and we join you in demanding accountability.
We should not forget that this movement has never been about one individual; it has always been about the people. It is grounded in the dignity of all, from farmworkers in the field to students in the schools, and in the ongoing pursuit of racial and social justice. Upholding these values requires recognizing that no one is above accountability, and that our commitment to justice must confront harm without exception or regard to status or legacy.
